 Dwarkadhish Temple (Jagat Mandir)


 The main draw for tourists coming to Dwarka, the Dwarkadhish Temple (Jagat Mandir), is believed to have been established more than 2500 years ago by Lord Krishna's great grandson, Vajranabh.

The Dwarkadhish temple, also known as the Jagat Mandir and occasionally spelled Dwarakadheesh, is a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Krishna, who is worshiped here by the name Dwarkadhish, or 'King of Dwarka'.

The Dwarkadhish Temple, also known as Jagat Mandir, was originally built by Vajranabha, the great grandson of Lord Krishna, on the banks of Gomti river in 400 BC. This five storied limestone structure stretching to a height of 170 feet is supported by 72 pillars and is located in the heart of the city.

       There are two entrances to this temple; the northern gate from the main market is called Moksha Dwar whereas the southern gate is called Swarg Dwar.The latter leads to the Gomti river, 56 steps below. 
Devotees usually visit the Dwarkadhish temple after taking a dip in the Gomti river. Exactly below the Temple Dome , 
in the sanctum sanctorum stands a two and a half feet tall idol of Dwarkadhish or Lord Krishna flanked by shrines of Ganesha, Shiva, Dattatreya, Devaki, Vasudeva, Balarama, Satyabhama, Jambhwanti and Revati. The festival to watch out for is Janmashtami that is celebrated with a lot of pomp and show. Devotees of Lord Krishna from all around the world gather here to offer prayers and be the part of the revelries.




Story Of  Behind Dwarka.


     Dwarka has also been referred to throughout its history as "Mokshapuri", "Dwarkamati", and "Dwarkavati". It is mentioned in the ancient prehistoric epic period of the Mahabharata. According to legend, Krishna settled here after he defeated and killed his uncle Kansa at Mathura.

   The modern city of Dwarka, which in Sanskrit means 'Gateway to heaven', is located north-west of the state. Marine scientists say archaeological remains discovered 36 m (120 ft) underwater in the Gulf of Cambay off the western coast of India could be over 9,000 years old.




   The Dwarkadhish Temple is a Pushtimarg temple, hence it follows the guidelines and rituals created by Vallabhacharya and Vitheleshnath.

  Dwarkadhish temple is located in Gujarat state on the shores of Arabian Sea and is a very popular pilgrim spot for the Hindus among the Char Dham destinations. Dwarkadhish temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and the name literally means ‘the Temple dedicated to the King of Dwarka’.

The town of Dwarka in Gujarat has a history that goes back hundreds of years and specified in the Mahabharat epic as the Dwaraka Kingdom. Arranged on the banks of stream Gomti, the town is portrayed in legend as the capital of Lord Krishna. It is said that Lord Krishna killed his maternal uncle Kamsa and made his grandfather Ugrasen king of Mathura. Kamsa's father in law Jarasandh (king of Magadh) attacked Mathura 17 times

"While the ''Vishnu Puran'' and the ''Bhagvad Gita'' mention that Krishna ''left'' Dwarka 36 years after the battle of Mahabharata and was not seen anymore, the ''Matsya Purana'' mentions that he was 89 years old when the battle was fought.

SanskritRama and Krishna must have spoken in their mother tongue which, in all probability, was Sanskrit. Since the present language in their locations (Ayodhya, Vrindavan, Mathura etc) is Hindi (or its dielects) it must have been only Sanskrit in the distance past when their divine play took place on earth.
