Kutch Bustard Sanctuary
Also known as the Lala Parjan Sanctuary, this is one of the two main locations for the conservation of the Indian Bustard, this is one of the smallest bird sanctuaries of the country, but a thriving breeding ground for the endangered bird. The semi-desert area allows for the ‘ghorad’ (local name) to feed on cereal crops that grow in the region.
Popularly known locally as the Lala Prajan Sanctuary, Kutch Bustard Sanctuary primary aim is to conserve the Great Indian Bustard. It is located in Jakhau village in Naliya Taluka, Gujarat. Among many other different varieties of wildlife that can be found within the reserve, there are three different kinds of Bustards themselves in the sanctuary.
The sanctuary covers an area of just over 2 sq. km, but still houses some of the excellent species including harriers, common cranes, black partridges, sand grouses, Black and Grey Francolin, Spotted and Indian Sandgrouse, quails, larks, shrikes, coursers, plover, Imperial Eagle, flamingos, herons, egrets, sandpipers, etc. Some other wild animals which are present here are wolf, caracal, desert cat, jackal, striped hyena, fox, mongoose, blue bull, chinkara, spiny-tailed lizard and various types of snakes.
Animals and Birds spotted here
Chinkaras, jungle cats, Nilgai, harriers, common cranes, black partridges (local name: kalo tetar), sand grouses, black and grey francolin, spotted and Indian sandgrouse, quails, larks, shrikes, coursers, plovers, Stoliczka's bushchat, white-naped tit, flamingos, herons, egrets, sandpipers.
Kutch Bustard Sanctuary best time to visit
October to February is the best time to visit this sanctuary.
The most ideal way to enjoy this retreat is, take a walk around the natures cradle while befriending various species of the Bustard family. There is also a watch tower from there one can spot a flock of Indian Gazelle and wolfs.
