History and Background :-

  1. The museum was established in 1888 and is named after Colonel James Watson, who was the British political agent of the Kathiawar Agency during the colonial era.
  2. The foundation stone for the museum was laid by the then Prince of Wales, Albert Edward, in 1888.
  3. The museum was initially established to preserve and showcase artifacts related to the cultural heritage, history, and archaeology of the Saurashtra region.


Architecture and Building :-

  • The museum is housed in a beautiful colonial-style building, which is considered an architectural gem in Rajkot.
  • The architectural style of the building reflects a blend of European and Indo-Saracenic influences.
  • The building features intricate stone carvings, arches, and a central tower, adding to its historical charm.

Location and Visiting Information :-
  • The Watson Museum is situated in Jubilee Garden, near the Rajkumar College in Rajkot.
  • The museum is open to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday between 9:30 AM and 1:00 PM, and from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. It remains closed on Mondays and public holidays.
  • Visitors can explore the museum at their own pace and admire the exhibits.

Timing :- 9:00 AM to 12:45 PM & 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Closed on Wednesday, 2nd and 4th Saturday and Government Public Holiday
