Ancient Period :

  • Somnath has a history that dates back to ancient times. The city finds mention in various ancient texts and scriptures, including the Skanda Purana, where it is referred to as "Prabhasa Kshetra" or "Prabhas Patan."
  • According to Hindu mythology, Somnath is considered one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, the sacred abodes of Lord Shiva. It is believed to be the first among the Jyotirlingas, and its significance as a place of worship predates recorded history.

Gujarat Sultanate Rule :

  • Somnath city witnessed several invasions and destruction during the medieval period. The city and the Somnath Temple faced attacks by various Muslim rulers, including Mahmud of Ghazni in the 11th century.
  • Mahmud's invasion resulted in the looting and destruction of the temple. However, despite the repeated invasions, the temple was rebuilt and restored multiple times by Hindu rulers and devotees.


Colonial Era and Independence :

  • During the colonial era, Somnath was under British rule. After India gained independence in 1947, efforts were made to revive and reconstruct the Somnath Temple and restore its religious significance.
  • The then Deputy Prime Minister of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, played a crucial role in the reconstruction of the temple. The temple was rebuilt using modern techniques and inaugurated in 1951.
